This one’s for the oldschool gamers. Remember Descent? Well the guys who made that are back to reclaim their rightful place atop the throne of six axis shooters with a game full of as much exploration as combat, a backstory as rich and dynamic as the gameplay, and a universe “rife for expansion,” as they’ve put it.
Their new game, Overload, is steeped in the tradition of its predecessors, only taken another step further. It’s a classic six-degrees-of-freedom shooter, meaning that you’ll be able to both move and rotate around all three axes while in the game, making for a more complex but dynamic control system. It has a soundtrack from Dan Wentz and Allister Brimble, and a story from the same pen that wrote FreeSpace. Matt and Mike have been talking about creating Overload for years, and we’re proud that they brought their website to us when it came time to finally create their project.
If you’d like to get an idea of what the game looks like, the home page of their new website features a video loop of in-game action (which is also our favorite feature of the site—honestly, it’s mesmerizing). You’ll also be able to read more about the team who worked on the game, learn about the latest news updates, and view screenshots, concept art, and the game trailer.
Their Kickstarter page is full of extra information, as well as the requisite slew of pimped-out rewards if you back their project.
And you really should go read about it, because honestly, it’s hard not to get excited. We grew up on Descent, and looking at this gives us a shiver of nostalgia—like the band’s got back together and they’re coming out with something amazing.
Like maybe I should go pick up a controller.
Like maybe, if I don’t get in on this, I’ll be missing out on something big.
